This blog has been created for the denizens or not of Black Rock City interested by the ephemeral architecture of the desert.

It showcases the different shelters that the Black Rock citizens have to come up with in order to survive in style (or not) the scorching sun and most of all, the almighty fierce winds.

Every year new designs come up, old ones are refined, same mistakes are made and next year, promise, it will not fly away.

Burning Man is an overwhelming experience, so to keep up with the visual overload that one might feel on the playa, I invite you to scroll down this miles long blog packed with hundreds of images. This blog is dedicated to Rod Garrett, the city designer/planner who for the last 16 years created and improved the original grid of a city in a deadly environment with 50,000 people, making the Burning Man experiment a phenomenon unique in the world. Weather talk: for the last two years the weather has been pretty mild no white-outs or freaky wind gust, except for the occasional dust devil randomly going through the city. This lack of strong winds is a little worrying since newbies or fresh burners might get used to these nice camping conditions and loosely tying down their shelters. As for the heat it's pretty much a personal perception, some says that it wasn't as hot as previous years, still, between 11:00 am and 2:00 pm it feels like someone forgot to turn off the oven in the kitchen.

Seat back, relax and don't forget to hydrate regularly.

Before getting to the meat of this blog I wanted to pay homage to some simple camps that to me encompass the spirit of Burning Man which is, beyond the elaborate costumes (or not at all) among swirling music, about leave no trace and self-reliance with humor in a desert environment.

Back for the second time in many years at Black Rock City, this real Moroccan tent is made for desert living.

Exploring the city I stopped by to ask Joe A. what was the brand of his shelter. To my utter surprise he told me that he spent a week sawing this combination of Tyvek fabric and stretch fabric holding up with thick tent poles. The entire shade fits in small bin and a small duffel bag. His work looked flawless. Bravo for his "Wonder Shade Tunnel".

After all these years I finally found the house of "The Burners".
A superb way to transform a bland trailer.

Black Rock City wouldn't be the same without these basic triangular pole structures with parachutes.
Set up by a yoga teacher to do some classes, he had to renounce his noble desire due to the sound blast coming from his unyogi neighbors (they were more into diarrheal dubstep and screaming teen anxiety punk rock).

Golden PVC pipe for this elegant structure

This blue umbrella gets overall golden rebar for ingenuity.
A truly amazing new addition to the ephemeral habitat of Black Rock.
It collapses like an umbrella and comes up as easy.
Designed by 2 brothers, Quill and Barley Hyde from Tonasket, WA. 23' of shade setup in 1 hour. BRAVO!!!

Also a new addition with this moon-base-like shelter made of wood panels covered with insulation film.
Created par Daniel Boone Brabon, he calls it the Pentayurt.

Inside it was really cool even with opened apex creating a nice air flow throughout the three rooms.

Golden rebar coated with diamonds for the recycling station of the the New year's eve camp. An example to follow.
Evapotron has a double layer for faster evaporation.

Just beside the camp there was this pod which got instantly the crystal rebar for design.
Please send me the name of its creator.

Golden rebar for this stretch fabric.
It reminds a lot of the Relax-o-Matic Plushitorium camp of previous years, in white.
Stretch fabric, poles and tennis balls, voila!

PVC pipes, metal connectors and a lot of ratchet straps.

Inside.

Because of the inherent purpose of a sail which is to catch wind (I am wrong?) there are very few structures using sails. This one is on the edge of the city worked well.

The Osiris camp had the tallest and heaviest pyramid on the playa, ever, 57 feet (17m) high with a 145,000 watt sound system!!!!.

Beyond tattoos, piercings, costumes, this is the weirdest thing I saw at BRC and it was not staged, that was his unique, and copyrighted, technic to keep his tarp high. As for the nose thing it came from the dust.

As every burner knows using a chute seems an easy and cheap solution. Then reality strikes and soon you get a gigantic balloon ready to take off.

Here is a solution that slowly is getting some traction and works.

The main issue with dome is the cover which has to be ever tight or loose enough to deal with the pressure on the structure caused by the wind gusts. Also it creates a unique identity among a plethora of similar shelters.

With the hexahurts, monkey huts are certainly the most popular self-made shelters at BRC.

Easy to make, to set up and to pack, they are everywhere. Only little negative point is that usually they are covered with gray tarp which after a while is visually boring which is the reason I choose these camps that stray from the model.

Note here the reinforcing crossed PVC pipes with ratchet straps for this big one.

Three of the hundreds of North Pole Party Shade on the playa. Cheap and easy to set up, everyone seems to love them, I would add more guidelines to really secure them, the last three years the wind has been really mild. Hot item to find since the company phased it out years ago.

Springbar, one of the few canvas tents that I would love to purchase, sturdy and roomy, more and more visible in the city.
Kodiak Canvas makes a similar model.

Great tent for camping in the park, but the mesh walls makes them a dust magnet and no real man wants to have his pink tutu dusty before coming out.

The joy of camping: the neighbor snoring world champion, the next door couple making out loudly...
Also again on the left a Springbar.

Once these easy to set up garden shades get destroyed you can recycle them in art installation to make your camp a landmark.

The largest ever camping-car/Rv's/trailer installation. This was off the campground and far away, creating a coherent settlement.

These cute R-Pod trailers are getting traction.

Kuddos for the lady who made this large quilt (?) to cover her trailer and tent. A colorful landmark for this neighborhood lost in the boonies.

Finally, after all these years seeing in every visited porta-potty ads for the pee funnel camp I found it, carport structure, with this self-service box filled with the most famous device on the playa.

This camp nicely (everything is relative) integrated the ugly prefabs

Here is the counter-example, just an ugly neighborhood of prefabs.
I truly accept them for the hard workers-participants-volunteers of the city (DPW, medics...)
This settlement looks like more week-long packages set up by a tour operator renting these facilities for some tourists (just an intuition without any hard facts).

I still have questions about the strength of these garden shades in case of heavy winds, nevertheless this camp made it through the week.

This was really a journey.

My camp at night which is in the tarps and poles category. One thing i am adamant with, nothing touches the ground except the counterweight in the middle, to minimize the dust gathering process, the less exposed the easiest the breakdown and the storage back home!

A nice lady stopped me to take my picture before crossing the playa to reach my base.

At the end of the week, exhausted and lighter (4 kg off) but so happy to have made it in one piece, I had met a lot of camp builders, creators, simple burners more than happy to share their knowledge and inputs. Little I knew that to go through the 50 hours of photo-shoot and 2000 images it will take me another 150 hours of editing to upload this images of Black Rock City 2011.

I really hope that the 5 of you who made it to this post enjoyed the journey.

This year the weather was somehow mild, several days without wind, bearable heat, few white-out in the city.

What was a bit unusual was the downpours at the very beginning that took everyone by surprise making the playa unwalkable for several hours combined with a very cold wind.

2010 was a year of trends confirmation, insulated hexayurts getting bigger, higher scaffolding structures, more disaster relief domes, hundreds of tan carports, tipi solo or in villages, invasion of R.V's, a growing number of hitchhikers (!!?), perennial camps becoming reassuring landmarks and, sadly, prefabs with private porta-potties.

Because of my intense search for new designs, new concepts, new way to create a neighborhood with shelters I don't feature twice the same camp/shelter unless there is improvement over the previous year (case for this year winner of the Golden Stake Award).

Old timers, landmark camps, I might have your camp in the 09, 08, 07 entries of this blog (lot of scrolling) or the 1996-2006 chapter of my web site.

One more time, the winner in design, persistence and inventiveness category is The Chiton.

Year after year, D'Milo Hallerberg the designer of this shell-like structure is upgrading his concept with this time a several parts collapsible structure.
(a chiton is a primitive marine mollusk in the class Polyplacophora from Wikipedia)
